The Humanist Association of
Northern Ireland (Humani)
welcomes the interim guidance on assisted suicide issued by the Public
Prosecution Service. As Northern Ireland’s largest humanist
organisation, we will certainly contribute to the public consultation
process. Whilst we recognise that those who believe in God will
invariably act in accordance with their faith, we are pleased with the
flexibility that the proposed guidelines offer to those of a different
worldview. Reaching the end of ones life in pain, discomfort and
indignity is difficult not only for the terminally ill but also their
immediate loved ones. Society must strive to ensure that people have
the highest possible quality of life even in death.
